Episode 42: A Look At Kenya’s Foreign Policy

We are 53 days away from this year’s general election, and this week, we talk to Nanjala Nyabola, a writer and policy analyst, about Kenya’s foreign policy. In 2014, for the first time since our independence, we published a written foreign policy document. Its vision is the pursuit of a peaceful, prosperous and globally competitive Kenya, and its mission is to project, promote and protect Kenya’s interests and image globally through innovative diplomacy, and contribute towards a just, peaceful and equitable world. How are we doing so far? Press play to find out!

  1. Good listen though some things were not looked at holistically such as Kenya going into Somalia just to sell them Miraa.

    1. Thank you Timothy! Stay tuned! 🙂 Though to clarify I have to say we didn’t say that’s why we went into Somalia, we said that our primary interest is to keep them stable because they are the biggest consumers of our miraa.

  2. I once went to Pretoria to renew my passport after it was mutilated in an accident. I had obtained my passport as a minor so I didn’t have an ID yet. I had turned 18 in SA. I was to wait 3 weeks then go collect my new passport. I dutifully went to collect it within five days of my flight and was informed that I had to wait and could only have it renewed in Nairobi. Travelling back was such a hassle as I had to explain to customs that the HC had told me to have it renewed back home. The lack of communication was disconcerting and the building in Pretoria lacks the prestige and professionalism of other countries’.

Really interesting conversation and I hope the 50% at Foreign Affairs are listening.

    1. Whoa, that must have been stressful M!! Sorry about your experience, glad you finally made it back home. I hope they’re listening as well. Stay tuned! 🙂

  3. Awesome conversation! I didn’t know alot of the details, especially about Sudan and Somalia.

FYI: The Moi government supported the genocidal regime of Rwanda. It sent a plane of Tutsis fleeing the genocide back to Rwanda to certain death. The Rwandans he gave refuge were the rich and the organizers of the genocide. Most of the organizers, like Habyarimana’s wife, passed through Kenya on their way to Europe. In the name of non-interference in sovereign matters, Kenya opposed the motion on UN intervention in Rwanda, which we now know could have saved many lives.

    1. Thank you Wandia! 🙂 Oh wow, we have been on the wrong side of history so many times. I hope we do better moving forward.

  4. Thank you so much for this. I have learnt a great deal. I am so grateful to be living in such times. To listen to Kenyans discussing these issues. I am still so bitter with the way our athletes were handled in the Olympics and historically. I have now listen to 3 of your podcasts and have began wondering? What is the role of the government in a Kenyans life? To punish the Kenyan?
